Small and fun was probably the best way to describe this past week. You could see swell trying to ignite the reefs but there just wasn't enough oomph in the waves to make them spark to life.
So we were confined to beach breaks, which wasn't really that dismal as our local beaches are providing some decent banks at the moment. That’s with the exception of Rennies which can only be described as a plate of half touched, cold leftovers that the dog licked so no-one wants to touch.
The guttered shell of a super bank that had potential to keep our summer sessions looked after was destroyed in the last swell. Hopefully the little pulse which arrived yesterday fixed it up a tad. Time to stay positive though as a small but again fun swell is due to develop later in our week.
To be a great surfer or even a good surfer takes a ton of discipline, so often it is really easy to look at the waves and notice an onshore wind, the water may be a touch too chilly, bluebottles could be abundant or simply laziness takes over and it's easier to just watch Netflix than waste an hour or two in grovel searching for just 1 satisfying ride.
But the more you do paddle out the more you are likely to score and the more your surfing will progress to a more elite level. Mark Roughly is the perfect example of this as he surfs every day and his skills are possibly as good as he has ever been which is phenomenal considering he is approaching 50 years of age. I watched Rougho surf Molly during the week about 6 times and his surfing was precise, quick and exciting. If we could take a page outta Mark’s book it would be stay keen kiddoes if you want to surf better.
A shout out to all Ulladulla Boardriders members who are keen to go on their massive bonding/camping weekend on the 1st weekend of November at Congo, south of Batemans Bay. The club will be holding its monthly contest down there and then holding a big BBQ bash so all members can meet, greet and basically enjoy each other's company in a fun environment.
So bring your board, tent, guitar and great attitude for the soon to be annual Ulladulla Boardriders Camping Extravaganza!
Gabriel Medina has beaten Sebastian Zietz in the final of the Quiksilver Pro France at La Gravière, France in epic style. With a frenzy of spectators crowding the shore line in Hossegor and a stunning golden evening light shining on winding right hand walls, the 2014 World Champion made relatively short work of the Hawaiian veteran. It is Medina's third win at this event, and he rocketed himself from the relatively unfamiliar depths of No. 8 up to No. 3 on the Jeep Leaderboard, still with a mathematical shot at the 2017 World Title.
With some incredible surfing in the quarter final John John Florence who devoured Mick Fanning looked the one most likely but fell short one heat.
He is still in the box seat for the 2018 world title going into Portugal.
