Day two of the first clash of the season, at Lighthouse Oval turf wicket, saw Bomaderry resume at 0 for 21 after Ulladulla had scored 209 runs last week.
No rain fell overnight, the covers had been removed, the pitch rolled and freshly marked by Curator Michael Bray.
The previous evening rabbits were spotted near the ground, and they had left their mark with several small holes in the outfield.
Injuries and family reasons saw two players missing on day 2, and the club had been scoured for replacements. The handy Tara Rudd, from the under 14s, and newcomer Ben Russell were happy to do fielding duties at short notice. The team is in your debt, thank you Ben and Tara. Good Work!
Under 16s players Will Walton and Ryan Geerlings were delighted to take the 11-over old ball and open up the attack for the Seagulls.
Ryan, usually a wicketkeeper, showed great versatility capturing the first wicket of the day.
Will Walton collected his first wicket in grade cricket, helped out through a juggling catch to sub Ben Russell at square leg.
Darren Smith bowled 10 overs of spin, claiming 2 wickets, one stumped by keeper Jamie Frendo, the other caught by Ryan after the ball deflected off the keeper to the slips position.
Bomaderry were cruising at 4/159, when Ryan was reintroduced to the attack, after Peter Hatwell had put in a stint of 9 penetrative overs of outswing from the Southern End.
Geerlings catapulted The Seagulls back into the game with 4 quick wickets, assisted by Robbo who chipped in with a pair of scalps, both caught by substitute Ben Russell at mid on.
Ryan, who had been on a hat trick, showed fantastic bowling potential on the turf wicket finishing with 5 for 31. Well done.
Afternoon tea was rapidly devoured with a BBQ enjoyed by all. Head Chef, ex-player Adam Stanford had volunteered to cook up the greatly appreciated refreshments. Thank you Adam for your efforts and wonderful cooking. Excellent.
Ulladulla had to see off the final session from a fired up Bomaderry attack, with openers Darren Smith and Hayden Jones purposefully striding to the wicket.
Hayden smashed a couple of boundaries before both he and next in, Charlie Frendo, fell to the dangerous first over of pace bowler Garry Evans.
Ryan Geerlings wasn’t done just yet, putting on a 57-run partnership with Darren for the third wicket, eventually falling for a well compiled 24.
Jamie Frendo achieved a tantalizing 68 run partnership, on his promotion, with the skipper, Darren.
Both remained not out when an early conclusion to play was agreed upon. Darren topping his first innings highest score with 65 not out, including 13 fours. Jamie ‘Chicka’ Frendo proved elusive on 17 not out.
Thank you once again to our wonderful substitutes Tara Rudd and Ben Russell and our satisfying BBQ Chef Adam Stanford.
Duck Award – Charlie Frendo, and it was a Golden.
Hero of the Day – Ryan Geerlings, 24 runs, a catch and a first ever 5 for in an innings. Well done.
Next game a two-day match vs Berry at Zealand Oval, Shoalhaven Heads.
