Beatboxing course on offer at youth centre

22 Oct, 2008 11:43 AM
THE Ulladulla Youth Centre will offer a free beatbox course, run by volunteer and talented musician Adam O’Shea.

The four-week introduction course will start on Wednesday, October 29 and will give Adam the chance to pass on the knowledge gained during his four years of beatboxing.

Since learning the skill from a friend, Adam has worked hard to perfect his ability and is looking forward to teaching kids how to beatbox.

“When I have done some beatboxing in front of mates, heaps of them have wanted to learn how to do it so I thought it would be great to run a course,” Adam said.

“I would really encourage both guys and girls to come along and give it a go.

“The things with beat boxing is that, really, everyone can do it.

“While you may not be able to do all the different noises, everyone will have something they can bring to a group performance.”

The course will run each Wednesday at 4pm with Adam giving up his time to teach.

With limited spaces available in the course, Adam is encouraging anyone interested to head to the Ulladulla Youth Centre on St Vincent Street to find out more.

“I am going to try to teach three things with the course,” Adam said.

“I’ll be teaching the ability to do it, the technique I guess, the history and I am hoping to teach kids some self confidence.

“I used to be pretty shy and learning beatboxing gave me more confidence in myself.”

Adam has been planning lessons and will keep the format open to allow for people to develop their skills at different paces.

“We will start out with warm up exercises and a little on the history of beatboxing before I give each person some individual tutoring,” Adam said.

Youth Centre coordinator Jody Quinell is excited to be supporting the project.

“It is great to have someone as talented as Adam offer his time to teach others,” she said.

“While this is only an introductory course, if we get a strong interest we are hoping to run a more in depth course early next year.

“The course will further the centre’s arts program with the centre already running music, dance and drama classes including a boys hip hop dance class.”

Sign up for the class will be on Wednesday, October 29 at the Youth Centre from 4pm and anyone who is unsure about joining in is welcome to come along and listen.
