THE request for a free tipping day to clean up Ulladulla prior to the summer holiday season has been denied by Shoalhaven City Council.
The Ulladulla and Districts Community Forum’s call for a free tipping day, to coincide with its town tidy up, was last highly commended by council, but rejected.
The call was seconded by the Shoalhaven Business Chamber’s southern branch that is supporting the business and residential clean up.
Forum president Margaret Slorach was disappointed with the outcome and is calling on all business and home owners to still make an effort and clean up their properties to welcome tourists.
A council spokesperson said council sends out two free tipping vouchers with rate notices and also permits free tipping for events such as Clean Up Australia Day.
It also holds an annual Household Chemical Collection, where domestic quantities of chemicals, paint, batteries, cleaning products can be surrendered at no cost.
The e-Waste Collection day offers residents the opportunity to drop off domestic, unwanted computer equipment free of charge with the next day planned for Saturday November 28 in the car park of Ulladulla’s council’s office in Deering Street.
The spokesperson said registrations are now open for individuals and community groups to take part in Clean Up Australia Day.
“This would be the ideal time to do a town cleanup,” he said.
The free day was rejected on the basis that council has financial obligations in regards to the waste levy that is payable to the State Government on the tonnes of waste that goes to landfill.
“This will cost Council $2.89 million for the current financial year,” the spokesperson said.
“Also council still has costs associated with the contractors who manage the waste facilities.
“These costs will still be payable even if there were an amnesty on tipping fees.
“Council has waste facilities in several areas of the city and to provide the amnesty in one area would require council to provide the amnesty in all areas of the city.”
