THE Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales and the ACT, Dr Gregory Levenston, was full of praise for local Freemasons when he visited the local region last week.
Dr Levenston, a GP, dined informally with members of Lodge Milton and their partners at the Mollymook Golf Club on Thursday afternoon.
He said he was very pleased with the work being undertaken locally by members of Lodge Milton, describing them as a hardworking group.
Dr Levenston's Mollymook stopover was part of a South Coast and Mountains tour that also took in Moruya, Bega, Pambula, Bombala and Cooma.
He conceded last week that his role required plenty of travel.
Dr Levenston rose to the position of Grand Master in 2008 and will be reaffirmed to the position in August for another 12 months.
He presides over a total of 324 Lodges with approximately 13,000 members in NSW and the ACT.
Local Freemason Neil Atkins said there were five Masonic Lodges in the Shoalhaven - one meeting in Berry, two in Nowra, one in Basin View and one in Milton.
The first meeting of Lodge Milton was held on October 23, 1878, just a few years after Milton was founded.
The Lodge moved into its own building on the Princes Highway in 1923 and has met there continuously ever since.
Before electricity the Lodge met on the Wednesday evening closest to the full moon.
Without those restraints it now meets on the second Monday of the month.
Mr Atkins said an aim of Freemasonary was to improve the lives and wellbeing of people in the community, regardless of any attachment to Freemasonry.
Recent beneficiaries of Lodge Milton donations have included Noahs Ark preschool in Ulladulla, the Ulladulla and District Community Resources Centre and Budawang School as well as some well-deserving individuals.
