MOLLYMOOK photographer Dom Barrington has attracted widespread acclaim for his images of penguins on the icy slopes of Antarctica.
But it is a picture taken much closer to home that has landed him a spot as a finalist in Australia's largest nature photography competition.
As Dom and sister Ollie prepare to exhibit a selection of works at Cupitt's Winery, the South Australian Museum this week named one of Dom's images as a finalist in the Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea (ANZANG) Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.
The image, titled 'Punk Fish', was taken on Darts Reef in Jervis Bay.
"I think this quirky image of a Red Scorpianfish captures the true 'inner fish'," Dom said.
"They have attitude. While they like to blend in and observe their surroundings with an apparent disdain, when you get close they love to stand out," Dom said.
This year ANZANG received a record 1540 entries form all over the world with 89 finalists to have their images displayed at the South Australian Museum from October 2 to November 22.
The overall winner will receive $5000 while the winner and runner-up in each of 10 categories will receive $1000 and $450 respectively.
There will also be a $500 people's choice award and a $50 people's choice award for junior entrants to be selected by visitors to the exhibition.
Dom will have his 'Punk Fish' image and another titled 'Snowline' published in a 73-page ANZANG book complementing the exhibition.
The winners will be announced next Thursday, October 1.
