It's the perfect time to plant

03 Mar, 2010 09:26 AM
LOCAL residents are being urged to their bit for the environment and to plant native trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

Caroyln Whan from Milton Rural Landcare said now was the perfect time for people to plant thanks to the recent soaking rains.

The Milton Rural Landcare native plant nursery in Ulladulla currently has plenty of stock on offer including trees such as Bangalay, Forest Red Gum, Stringybark, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Black/Grey/Coast Sheoaks, Bottlebrush, Banksias and Melaleucas.

Eroded streambanks can be revegetated using Matrush or Lomanda longifolia.

The native plant nursery is located next to the Shoalhaven City Council depot in Deering Street, Ulladulla and is open Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 10am and 12 noon.

The nursery is operated by a group of approximately 20 volunteers and plays an important role in maintaining the genetic integrity of our local bushland while adding to its biodiversity.

It has stock suitable for everything from farms to the sandy soils found in our seaside gardens.

Volunteers will even propagate seeds or cuttings for farmers, bushcarers and landholders to help extend native remnant vegetation.

The nursery functions by donations and membership is $10 per year which entitles the member to 10 free plants.

More information is available by phoning 4455 5150 or 0415 105 536 or by emailing landcare@presoz.com.au

Landcare will also have a stall at the Milton Show this weekend for those people wanting more information and what to plant and where.
