Kitchen is now in use

24 Jun, 2009 01:16 PM
MILTON-Ulladulla Meals on Wheels has plenty of scope for expansion with meals now being prepared in a spacious new kitchen in Ulladulla.

The purpose-built kitchen is part of the Ulladulla Multi-Purpose Centre in St Vincent Street and is located alongside the Meals on Wheels office.

Milton-Ulladulla Meals on Wheels coordinator Jackie Lidgard said meals had previously been prepared, under contract, by Breakers at Mollymook.

The move to the Ulladulla kitchen was made last Monday and the additional space will make it possible for the service to cater for more clients as the need arises.

Until last week, Ms Lidgard said, the Ulladulla kitchen had been sitting "empty and idle".

It is now a hive of activity with hot meals prepared by Antoinette Stapleton every morning in preparation for the arrival of volunteer delivery drivers at 11am.

The Milton-Ulladulla service, which comes under the banner of Southern Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels, has 30 'hot' clients and 45 'frozen' clients between Milton and North Durras.

Different organisations, also operating under the Southern Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels banner, operate in the Lake Conjola and Sussex areas.

In the Milton-Ulladulla region, 'hot' clients receive a hot lunch every day - complete with dessert and juice - while 'frozen' clients receive a delivery once every week.

The service boasts a four-week menu for hot meals, which means clients receive a different meals every day for four weeks. The menu changes from season to season.

'Frozen' clients select their own meals from a set menu.

The Meals on Wheels service is available to the aged, frail, young people with disabilities and their carers.

Clients are usually referred to the service by health practitioners before being assessed by Meals on Wheels staff for eligibility.

It is a not-for-profit service and the cost to clients - $8 a day for hot meals and $4.50 for frozen meals - is to cover the cost of the food and nothing more.

Government funding and grant money is used to cover all other costs.

Those people interested in the Meals on Wheels service should initially contact Virginia Whitby from Southern Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels on 4455 2861.

Virgina will assess a prospective client's eligibility before passing on the details to Ms Lidgard who looks after clients on a day to day basis.

Ms Lidgard reports to a volunteer management committee.
