Locals urged to help vet service

30 Sep, 2009 10:40 AM
MOLLYMOOK Outriggers member Kylie Young-Grey is calling on the community to throw their support behind the Cook Islands based Esther Honey Foundation.

Kylie and four other crew members from the outriggers, will travel to the Cook Islands to compete as part of an Australian team at an Outrigger Canoe Regatta.

While in Rarotonga, in the Cook Islands, the team will once again be supporting the Esther Honey Foundation, a veterinary service funded entirely by donations.

Following the success of her trip in 2008, Kylie is once again calling on the community to throw their support behind her efforts and donate.

Flying out on November 19, Kylie is hoping to gather donations of new pet collars and accessories or funds, with 100 per cent of all raised going directly to the foundation.

A passionate animal lover, Kylie has been actively involved in animal welfare over many years and is excited to be able to again offer support to the Esther Honey Foundation.

The volunteers working at Esther Honey in Rarotonga were brought to tears last year when Kylie arrived with more than $600 worth of food and a ute load of collars, leads and accessories generously donated by businesses and individuals of the Milton Ulladulla community.

“On my last trip to the Cook Islands I saw many homeless dogs and it is great to know there is a foundation working to help give these animals a better life,” she said.

Having already raised $1500, Kylie is hoping to raise further funds to again purchase food for the animals once in the Cook Islands and is also calling on donations of collars and toys for both dogs and cats,

“It was strange to see that the dogs didn’t really know what toys were, but it didn’t take too long for them to get the hang of things.

“Although a squeaking rubber chop did cause some confusion for a while,” Kylie said.

The Outrigger Canoe Regatta will see teams from Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Samoa and Guam take part with more than 600 paddlers expected to make the trip.

Different teams chose to support different charities in the Cook Islands and raise funds in the lead up to the event.

“The Esther Honey Foundation is funded entirely by donations,” Kylie said.

“Even the vets are donating their time to work for three to nine months for free and many Australians have been part of the team helping out.”

The association takes in all stray, abused or maltreated cats and dogs and feed, de-sex and care for the animals before finding the animals new homes.

Anyone interested in supporting Kylie and the Esther Honey Foundation can leave donations in the ‘Please Help the Cook Islands Animals’ box at Bunnings Warehouse Ulladulla.
