 Such a terrific catch

Such a terrific catch

24 Sep, 2008 12:49 PM
SUNFLOWER House, providing helping hands, recovery services and community programs for those struggling with day to day living, had a great catch last week when Bait’n’Tackle at Burrill Lake generously donated fishing rods and reels.

Sunflower House runs a Thursday fishing group at Ulladulla Harbour from 10am to 12.30pm and was in need of new equipment.

Sunflower House recovery support worker Colleen Maguire said members of the group had been using handlines and rusty hooks but “still manage to catch something every Thursday”.

“This new fishing gear will certainly assist with our program and help everyone to have more fun,” she told the Times.

“We are always struggling for equipment and donations to run the community support program and are so grateful for generous people like Rob and Wendy McFadyen.

“At a time when small local businesses are doing it tough, we are really appreciative of the difference this significant donation will make.

“A lot of the group haven’t fished since they were young kids and are finding the therapy of fishing, enlightening to their lives.

“When they see these brand new, shiny rods and reels – they are going to feel a million dollars.”

Bait’n’Tackle at Burrill owner Rob McGadyen said fishing was such a therapeutic sport.

“When you are fishing, you can forget everything else,” Wayne explained.

“I used to work at Milton Hospital and could see the impact mental health was having on the community.

“We can’t donate money at this time of year, just after winter, but we are glad to give some new fishing gear to the group,” he said.

Colleen said the service Sunflower House offers is proving very successful.

“We need people to know there is respectful, confidential, private help and support for day to day living available to people struggling with depression or mental health issues.

“We provide a healthy lunch for participants in our programs for a gold coin donation.

“The difference in the lives of those who participate is amazing.”

Sunflower House is open Tuesday to Thursday, with coffee, tea and lunch available at the exciting programs including beading, jewellery making, leather work, mind and body workshops, woodworking, carpet bowls, creative writing, tennis, gardening, art and music along with the fishing group.

Barbecues are held every third Tuesday and a bus outing arranged for every fourth Tuesday of the month.

Those interested in one or more of the programs can contact Colleen on 0417 449 909.
