Swing and sway the colonial way

03 Mar, 2010 09:25 AM
IT is time to pull on some pantaloons and beauty up with a bonnet for the upcoming Milton 150th Anniversary Colonial Bush Dance.

With only 100 tickets on offer, the event is sure to be one of the highlight of the Milton 150th celebrations.

To be held at the Milton CWA hall on Saturday, March 13, the dance will include traditional music by band Cocky's Joy.

Organisers Sue McMahon, Bev Pond and Margaret Osmond are busy putting the finishing touches to the event.

"We wanted to have a family friendly community event - just like they used to have back in the early days on Milton," Bev said.

"Bush dances were a lifeline for the residents of Milton - a chance to meet people and form friendship and relationship.

"The dances would have been the only chance for many young men and women to meet and would have been a starting point for many marriages."

To help dancers get into the swing will be a barn dance caller - guiding people through each number.

To add to the atmosphere of the dance, people are encouraged to dress in period style.

“We would love to get people dressed in Colonial style,” Sue said.

“It is optional, of course, but it will add to the fun for the night.”

A night of family fun and tradition, the Colonial Bush Dance will include a light supper provided by the Milton CWA and special prizes handed out throughout the evening.

Open to all ages, tickets to the dance costs $15 for adults, $10 for kids or $40 for a family of two adults and two children and are available through Something’s Brewing in Ulladulla and Milton Hair Design in Milton.

Kicking off at 7pm and running through until 11am, the event will be alcohol free, secure event for all ages.

Following the Colonial Bush Dance will be one of the biggest celebrations for Milton’s 150th – a Family Fun Day on Saturday, March 20 at the Milton Showgrounds.

The Milton 150th Committee are calling for local authors and buskers to be part of the day.

“We are inviting local performers to come along and busk during the event,” Margaret said.

“We will also be running stalls for local authors to promote and discuss their work and would love to hear from anyone interested in getting involved.”

To get involved at the Family Fun Day, contact Sue McMahon on 4455 2739.

And don’t forget – to mark Milton’s 150th, the Milton Post Office has a commemorative rubber postage stamp. To get your mail posted, call in to the office and ask.

Special packs are available with stationary featuring the Milton 150th logo for only $1 through the Milton 150th committee.
