 Unlucky break adds to nuptials

Unlucky break adds to nuptials

20 May, 2009 12:10 PM
IT'S not how they planned their wedding day but in hindsight they wouldn't want it anyway.

Former local resident Shannan Perry returned 'home' to Bawley Point late last month with husband-to-be, Adelaide real estate agent Gary Hall, in preparation for their April 26 nuptials.

But a bit of friendly play wrestling with relatives went horribly wrong two days before the wedding with Gary breaking his leg - badly.

He was taken by ambulance to Milton Hospital under the distinct impression that the wedding would have to be cancelled because of the need to operate as soon as possible.

This would have been particularly bad news for Gary's relatives, who had already arrived at Bawley Point from their homes in Canada for the celebration.

In stepped the staff at Milton Hospital.

Shannon said local doctors and nurses liaised with the Wollongong-based surgeon to ensure the wedding could proceed as scheduled.

And proceed it did, with the happy couple joining friends and relatives at the reception until 9pm when the pain, for Gary, became all too much.

Shannon - still in her wedding dress - then made the drive into Milton Hospital with husband Gary lying in the back seat of their car, in agony.

She said their arrival at the hospital's emergency entrance caused "quite a scene".

Shannon said one of the highlights of the day had been arriving back at the hospital to find staff had pushed two beds together in a 'private' room and had arranged flowers and chocolates.

Gary was taken to Wollongong the following day (Monday) with a titanium rod inserted into his leg on the Tuesday.

The couple had planned a week-long stay in Kangaroo Valley as a honeymoon but that was also placed on holiday for a few days. When they finally got there they spent a couple a couple of nights in a disabled suite.

They have since returned to Adelaide, with Gary resting at home and Shannan juggling her time between work and caring for her husband.

Shannan told the Times this week that it was a "beautiful" wedding and that she couldn't imagine it any other way.

"It made it a really special time," she said.

All the guests had been even more determined to have a good time because of the circumstances and partied on well after the bridge and groom had departed.

Shannon had nothing but praise for the staff at Milton Hospital, describing their efforts as "unbelievable".

"They were so good in the way they dealt with it," Shannon said.

"It made me very proud of our local community."

Milton Hospital general manager Judy Nelmes said staff had been happy to go the extra yard for Shannon and Gary.

"Our staff wanted to make the day really special for them - especially as she was a local girl marrying a young fellow from Adelaide," she told the Times.

"He was just a young chap and we really wanted to help make the most of the day."
