Daunting task ahead

24 Feb, 2010 11:36 AM
ANOTHER long day at the wicket seems assured if Ulladulla United is to overtake North-Nowra Cambewarra this Saturday and scramble their way back into a top four position as the 2009-2010 South Coast Register Shoalhaven District Cricket Association now draws to a close.

Statistically, United can still narrowly reach a semi-final berth however the locals must defeat North-Nowra Cambewarra this Saturday and then knock over Nowra in two weeks' time.

In all probability, it appears a daunting task yet if the locals were to put their heads down and concentrate on the placement of their shots, they just might reach the top four but one failure from here on will certainly draw the curtain on their season.

North are certainly in the driver's seat after declaring last Saturday at 7 for 247 after promising youngsters Nick McDonald (82) and Brady Warren (75) consolidated a strong middle-order partnership as United used seven bowlers in their attempt to break the up the duo.

At the start, openers Peters (16) and Hickmott (10) moved along fluently before United skipper Terry Dorrell removed Hickmott then dismissed Peters in his next over and in the following over had Fairweather (8) brilliantly caught at cover by Joey Lavelle to return with 3/60.

After Harley Bell had Davidson (1) caught by Doug Chisholm at mid-off, the home side started to reel at 4/43 however, McDonald and Warren with the assistance of Dean Tyson (67) in 36 minutes made the necessary corrections for North-Nowra to declare at 7/247 after Peter King 0/23, Harley Bell 1/57, Aaron Wester 0/28, Wes Holmes 0/20 and reliable Robbie Cooke returning with 2/42.

In reply, United started its first innings at 5.55pm, and lost opener Terry Dorrell for one as Harley Bell (12) and Aaron Wester (4) both remain not out at 1/17 by the close of play.

SECOND GRADE

Competition front runners North-Nowra Cambewarra easily grabbed a first innings lead after Ulladulla collapsed to be all out for 54 last Saturday at Lighthouse Oval.

Exploiting the wicket for all its worth, Wakefield had Jon Kingston (4) caught at first slip then Michael Craze made the breakthrough by removing Trevor Norton (8), Dave Banks (0), Tony Lavelle (4) and Damien Clark (0) to bag an amazing 4/5 from eight overs with only Andy Gardiner (17) reaching double figures for the Gulls.

In reply, North compiled 7/58 declared and then sent Ulladulla back into bat which presently sees the locals at 2 for 11 after Norton (0) was removed leg before wicket and Jed Silver(2) was clean bowled by Craze.

THIRD GRADE

Second-placed Ulladulla United third-graders have a game on their hands this Saturday after tail-enders North-Nowra Cambewarra Blues batted all day to reach 166 runs at Ray Abood Village Green.

Sent into bat, the Blues fought extremely hard to post their total with first-drop Leigh Paulin adding a fighting 50 with five other batsman reaching double figures. Darrell Lewis was the pick of the United bowlers by returning with 3/21 from 13 overs with Glen Cameron supporting strongly with 2/44 and Mike Ylias 1/22, Kane Morgan 1/24 and Luke Condon 1/10 contributing as well.

FOURTH GRADE

Ulladulla United Blues fourth graders got a bonus last week when Nowra Whites had to forfeit but not so the Golds this Saturday who have to chase down Bomaderry's total of 147 at Ulladulla Sports Park.

Four good knocks from Munilla (24), McCarron(25), Matthews (27) and Robson (32) made United's plight more difficult however, youngsters Sam Lee 4/11 and Mitchell Clark 2/26 and old-stager Allan Gilkes 2 for 5 kept the visitors honest and the chase realistic.
