PLACES like Cardiff, Caerphilly, Risca, Ystradgniais and Abergavenny might not immediately come to mind to most Australians but for lanky Luke Young, the Milton-Ulladulla Bulldogs' newest recruit, these were areas of combat during his weekly rounds of football as a Celtic Crusader contract player two seasons ago before making an impressive debut in the English Super League.
Laying west of England and separated by the Cambrian Mountains and south of the Irish Sea, the Celtic Crusaders were a new addition to the English Super League when the then 25 year-old five-eighth sparred brilliantly with some of Great Britain's best to score 14 tries and kick 15 goals in that season before returning to Australia in early 2008 after suffering a hip injury, to recuperate.
Last year he played a prominent role in steering leading Cronulla-Sutherland club, De La Salle, to a first grade semi-final berth.
Prior to heading to Wales on a one year contract, Young, a quietly spoken lad, made a good name for himself at the Canterbury Bulldogs in Sydney as a scheming five-eighth by playing 33 senior games and adding many points from tries and goals throughout his stay which was dominated by his play-making skills.
There's no doubt the likeable Young will be a major asset for the local Bulldogs this season after the sudden departure of crack pivot Tommy Cook to Shellharbour in the off-season and local crowds and supporters are certain to enjoy his style and presentation.
Presently, the Dogs are training strongly and are on schedule for their first series of home trials beginning over a three-week period at Mollymook Oval from Saturday night, March 13 with training sessions on Tuesday and Thursdays nights from 6pm and Saturday afternoons from 1pm under fitness guru Brett Fowler.
The Dogs are still on the lookout for senior players and those players interested should contact club president Peter Leffley on 0411 207 680.
Charity day this Friday
