Ladies enjoy annual golf presentation dinner

What lovely weather for golf on Tuesday – no wind, no rain and no sun!

And on Wednesday, on a perfect summer evening, we had our annual Presentation Dinner at the Golf Club’s Beachside function centre, looking out on to beautiful Mollymook Beach.

First to golf.

This week, we were divided into two teams – playing for either the Captain (sporting a gold ribbon) or the President (wearing green ribbon).

Responding to popular demand, we added in an extra twist within the two team event - the “high markers/low markers” 4BBB, with a draw to form partnerships from the top and lower end of the handicap scale.

And the combination of perfect weather, the course in tip top condition and some random but optimum 4BBB partnership draws resulted in a lot of really great scores.

You had to have 42 points in the four ball to scrape in to the ball comp!

For the President’s side, the winning team was Jo Woodward (19) and Jenny Moore (45) with a fantastic 49 points.

For the Captain’s team, it was the combination of Carol Hodgetts (21) and Janice Henney (36), with 48 points. It was Carol’s first win since she moved to the area last year from Sydney and joined our club – great to see!

Runners up for the President’s team were Di Boland (27) and Pam Krieken-Beek (31) with 46 points; and for Captain’s team Kim Powell (10) and Di Maguire (34) with 45 points.

Balls went to Robyn Treweek and Dell Thompson, Denise Bower and Marie Brown; Rhonda Waller and Margaret Lowes; Joan McMullen and Sue Hackett; Greer O’Sullivan and Judy Clugston, Rae Hettle and Pam Maurer; Sue Pender and Margaret Coutt-Walsh; Verona Faul and Kerry Turner; Joan Hartas and Maureen Derham. Bev Parker and Yvonne Shepherd; Denise Lewis and Bev Clinghan, and Gloria Norman and Irene Coburn – 42 points or better.

In the Captain’s vs President’s team event, the President’s team narrowly defeated the Captain’s team, by 674 points to 668 points.

So all those playing for the President also won a ball – or an additional ball in lots of cases!

The only people not to win a ball were 12 sad souls playing for the captain who scored less than 42 points – but they won a consolation Mars bar instead so were quite happy!

There were no nearest the pins today, but the big news was our Vice-Captain Rhonda Waller’s eagle on 3rd hole – which won her a whole box of balls.

Congratulations, Rhonda, a mighty achievement.

The Milton IGA voucher was won by Liz Baker and Veronica Johnston won the Uptown Patisserie voucher – thank you very much to our generous sponsors.

Our annual Presentation Night was held at Beachside Function Centre on November 25.

Pre-dinner drinks and a beautiful meal preceded the presentation of trophies for the major competitions during the year.

We were fortunate again to have our Life Member, Shirley Richards, helping with the presentations.

Some fun entertainment followed, with Joan McMullen giving an excellent recitation and two kookaburras (bearing a striking resemblance to Lyn Aitken and Jean Ubrihien) sharing their treetop views on the golfing action on a Tuesday morning.

Hilltop news and diary notes

Bonnie Roberts has had major surgery on her foot and will be off golf for four months, but it was great to see her back for the presentation dinner.

Christmas break up day – December 15 – will be a shotgun start.

The sheet is up in the locker room so get your team organised and put your names up.

Many thanks to Margaret Coutts-Walsh, who will be donating some of her yummy mince pies to make the raffle extra-special on that day.

Mollymook Vet’s Canberra Week of Golf in March – if you would like to participate, and haven’t already let John Bendeich know, please be sure to put your name down on the list, now up in the locker room.

A reminder that if you can bring a toy or Christmas hamper type food item for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal, it would be greatly appreciated.

NCRs – if you do not want to enter your score in the computer, could you please tear the top off your card and put that in the box, as otherwise we are never sure that all the cards are actually in.

Pennants – Captain Bev, Vice-Capt Rhonda and Secretary Robyn attended a meeting of the Far South Coast Region at Bega last week.

There was extensive discussion on the Pennants’ format and once the final details are received, more information on 2010 pennants will be given out.

Some great scores were again recorded in the Thursday comp: Lindsay Shaw had a great 40 points; Joan McMullen had 38 points, whilst Bev Parker and the ever-steady-Robyn-Williams both had 37 points.

Congratulations, ladies.

Beachside

It was an overcast and humid day for golf and it can be said that a number of players chose the humidity as their excuse for any play with which they were unhappy.

In fact, rumour has it that Maureen Bromfield is selling her irons after today’s game!

The unhappy players did not include Jean Southin who stands to lose7 strokes from her handicap with her wonderful score of 45 points, putting paid to the aspirations of a number of hopeful players who also turned in good scores in division 2.

Congratulations, Jean.

In the 9 hole competition, there were three players at the top with 19 points with the winners being decided on a countback.

This week’s full results follow.

Division 1 Winner: Jackie Lehmann (39) 36 points; runner up: Elizabeth Andrews (35) 35 points

Division 2 Winner: Jean Southin (45) 45 points; runner up: Rhonda Punnett (45) 38 points

The 9 hole winner was Anna Whittles (34)19 points on a countback from Loris Mills (40) also with 19 points and also on a countback.

Ball distribution: 18 Hole: Connie Anforth 34, Noelene Hunt (33), Doreen Ralph (33), Kay Mewburn (32), Sue Butson (32) and Carol Flynn (32). 9 Hole: Pam Waugh (19), Chris Hollott (17)

Nearest the Pin 2nd: Anna Whittles; 6th: Connie Anforth; drive and pitch 9th: Carol Flynn

Longest Drive Div 1: Sue Butson; Div 2: Loris Mills.

Elizabeth Andrews had a birdie on the 1st which is no mean feat, and Loris Mills had a gobbler on the 9th.

The Beach Hut voucher was won by Clare Henry and the Patisserie voucher was won by Di Samuel.

Thank you again to all our generous sponsors for their support this year.

Beachside Diary and News

A number of ladies enjoyed playing in the “9, Wine and Dine” event this week and look forward to the next one organised for December 14.

Next week will be our Christmas function and our last game for the year.

It will be a team event with each player carrying only one club.

The theme is Hawaiian so please come dressed in the sprit of the day.

Remember to bring in your (unwrapped) toys for the Salvation Army to distribute to those in need.

Birthday wishes go to Loris Mills for November 24.
