LOFTS SHINES IN REP MATCH

15 Apr, 2009 12:19 PM
MILTON-ULLADULLA Bulldog rugby league Group 7 representative forward Steine Lofts played a commanding role in last Sunday’s annual clash against Group 6 at McKay Park, that saw the Bulls winning comfortably 26-14 in a good quality match.

Although Far South Coast Group 6 winger Robbie Carter got his team off to a quick start by scoring in the opening minutes, that was the last time that they would see daylight. Bulls winger Jake Luff streaked across at the eighth minute, after Gerringong’s hooker Mickey Brown broke clear, then Jamberoo left winger Matt Coelho converted his own try, after Warilla second rower Aaron Henry unloaded, before Group Six backrower Clint Mason barged his way over to level the scores at 10-10 at the break.

Straight after the interval, with Gerringong’s Cronin and Brown figuring prominently in the Bulls’ attack, a dashing burst by Milton’s Tommy Cook found Berry prop forward Gavin Jarrett in great position. He despatched his Magpie team mate Aaron Pont for the corner and, after Coelho made good the extra, the Bulls had charged ahead 16-10, after 48 minutes of play.

Built with great engines, both the Jarrett brothers Gavin and Matt, created havoc as both sent the Bulls’ attack forward at all times and, only too many team changes and a serious lapse in concentration out wide at the 54th minute, allowed Group 6 lock forward Bart Masters to spear over after a good backline raid.

The Bulls snorted into action again at the 64th minute when Lofts found centre Cronin racing wide to score, after winger Pont took play within metres of the opposition tryline before Jamberoo winger Luff crossed over for his second try of the match and, with his mate Coelho adding the conversion, the Bulls ran out easy winners 26-14 by scoring five tries to three.

Lofts, once again, was all over the place and pivotal in both attack and defence, as was Gerringong’s Cronin and Brown, who were both terrific. However, the honours belonged overall to the Berry duo, the Jarrett brothers, who are certainly about to cause a lot of problems for a lot of forwards throughout this years Group 7 First Grade competition.

The Milton-Ulladulla Bulldogs had better be alert this coming Saturday at Berry Showground, when both outfits clash from 1.15pm.

DOGS WARY OF MAGPIES

The 2009 Carlton Group 7 rugby league first grade competition resumes this weekend with no Under 18s due to the regional championships. Defending title holders Milton-Ulladulla will play Berry-Shoalhaven Heads Magpies at Berry Showground this Saturday, starting at 1.15pm with the Reserve Grade game and the First Grade starting at 2.45pm.

Warilla is expected to maintain their share of the lead with Jamberoo, considering the Gorillas should be too strong for Bay and Basin, however Jamberoo has to climb over Gerringong if they are to stay joint-leaders.

Arguably the highlight of the round will be the clash between Kiama and Shoalhaven Jets on Sunday at Kiama Showground. A loss for any team over the next fortnight could have giant consequences, as all teams are attempting to advance and to consolidate their position prior to the end of the first round.

Albion Park Eagles welcome Batemans Bay to Centenary Field. The hapless Tigers have conceded 142 points in two games and it appears they have a long season ahead, as will Bay and Basin, who will struggle against leaders Warilla at Francis Ryan Reserve on Sunday, completing round three of the competition.

Presently, Warilla and Jamberoo are on a four points and lead the race, followed by Milton (three), Albion Park, Berry, Kiama and the Jets on two points each, with Gerringong (one) and the Bay and Basin and Batemans Bay struggling without a win at this stage.

Batemans Bay and Warilla share the Reserve Grade lead on four points, with Milton, Kiama, Albion Park, Jets, Berry and Jamberoo all locked on two points each, with winless Bay and Basin bringing up the rear.

At this juncture, five teams share the Under 18s competition lead with Culburra, Milton, Berry, Kiama and Albion Park all undefeated, Batemans Bay (two) and Gerringong, Bay and Basin, Robertson, Warilla and Jamberoo still without a win.
