Sixth in the state

13 May, 2009 12:03 PM
Charlotte Millard has only be a horse rider for just under four years, but following her success at the State Sporting Championships, is now ranked sixth in her age division for New South Wales.

The talented 10-year-old travelled with her family, mum Alicia and grandparents Adele and Warrick, to Scone for the competition and managed to bring home four ribbons from the seven events she completed.

Riding her horse Chevy, Charlotte took out a first, third, seventh and eighth place with her total point score giving her a ranking of sixth for the state.

Charlotte competes against both male and female riders in her division, many of whom have been riding horses their whole lives.

Charlotte bought home a first place in the running T, a bending race where horse and rider complete a t-shaped bending course.

In the mug race, a race that tests speed, agility and precision, Charlotte managed a third against what she described as “very hard” competition.

Charlotte also added points to her overall score with a seventh in the flags race and an eighth in the barrel race.

Coming sixth in New South Wales was a great achievement for young Charlotte, who was pleased with her result.

“I am very happy with how I went,” Charlotte said.

“I got ribbons for each event and I got a bag of feed as a prize.

“I think Chevy will like the feed more than the ribbons.”

Charlotte trains at Milbree Park Riding School with teacher Milea Woods and is a member of the Milton Pony Club.

To qualify for the state competition, Charlotte had to achieve certain times in each event, a challenge that saw her travel around regional shows, bringing home many ribbons from each including several ribbons from the Milton Show.

Charlotte rides as often as she can and completes lessons.

“I do a lot of free time when I’m not doing lessons,” Charlotte said.

Chevy and Charlotte have been a team together for nearly three years and both Charlotte and her grandparents Adele and Warrick credit some of Charlotte’s success to the great relationship between horse and rider.

“Chevy is a really fast horse,” Charlotte said.

“Sometimes I want Chevy to go slow so she doesn’t knock my knees when bending, but she always wants to go as fast as she can around the course.”

Charlotte said her favourite horse riding style is jumping and sporting and in the sporting she enjoys bending races.

“Chevy just does her own thing in bending,” Charlotte said.

“I just have to lean with the horse and help lead her through.”

Charlotte said that while all her friends have been very impressed with her continued horse riding success, it is her family that is the most proud.

Charlotte would like to thank her coach Milea and Milton Pony Club organisers Glen Drury and Ray Morton for dedicating their time to helping Charlotte to prepare for the state competition.

Up next for Charlotte and Chevy is the Milton Pony Club Gymkhana later this month.
