The performance tells the story of a modern day Romeo and Juliet who are involved in the street gangs of New York.
“I think it's invigorating for the students to study and perform Shakespeare,” UHS teacher and director Tory Jauncey said.
“For them Shakespeare can seem so old so it’s nice for them to see a modern take on the story.”
This year’s cast and crew involves more than 70 students.
“This year we have an incredibly strong creative and performing arts contingent,” Ms Jauncey said.
“We do a musical every two years and we like to do something completely different each time.
“As with any musical there is always a romantic, love element, but this is not a happily ever after.”
UHS’s production of West Side Story opens on Saturday, June 17. For tickets please call 4455 1799.
