The man was driving his small Isuzu trayback truck south on the Princes Highway when it crossed to the wrong side of the road about 1.3km south of the Bawley Point Road intersection, then continued into a large tree about 7.30am.
The man was trapped in the truck with multiple injuries, including a leg being severed in the accident.
Paramedics were joined by police and Fire and Rescue officers as they worked to free the man and keep him alive, while the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter was called in to transport the man to hospital for emergency treatment.
However the helicopter was called off when the man died in the truck a short time later.
The accident resulted in one lane of the highway being blocked for several hours and emergency service personnel tried to save the man, with the closure continuing as specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit started looking into the accident’s cause.
Police are also preparing a report for the coroner.
