On Sunday the Rural Fire Service (RFS) was actively fighting 13 fires in the Kempsey region, the most significant being the near 3000-hectare blaze on Maria River Road, near Crescent Head.
"There are no properties threatened by any of the fires," RFS spokesman Brendan Doyle said. "But a lot of resources are on the ground.
"Investigators will arrive on Monday to look into whether these fires were accidental, caused by nature or started maliciously. If that's the case, then the police will become involved."
More than 20 trucks were occupied at the Maria River Rd fire in Limeburners Creek over the weekend with resources split between the northern and southern areas of the fire ground.
"The RFS and National Parks [and Wildlife Service] have been working hard for a few days and there is a big effort to try and wrap things up," Mr Doyle said. "The weather is on their side and we're consolidating containment lines."
Fire activity has increased markedly over the past week however, a lot of the other fires, the RFS spokesman said, were contained to remote areas.
SATURDAY:
THERE is a significant smoke haze over northern parts of Port Macquarie as the Maria River fire continues to blaze away.
The Rural Fire Service website estimates the scrub fire on Maria River Road in Limeburners Creek to be more than 3000 hectares.
That means it has doubled in size since Thursday.
Authorities have spoken regularly to campers at Point Plomer over the past week and are working at containing the fire on a number fronts over the weekend.
Further north, the fire on the Dulkoonghi Range, north of Crescent Head Road, is estimated to be 340ha but under control.
At Hat Head, still further north, a 100ha fire is under control as are fires closer to Kempsey - at Skillion Nature Reserve and Roses Road, Collombatti.
Some hazard reduction burns are being undertaken in Port Macquarie over the weekend.
What's your view of the fires like? Just smoke, hopefully. Don't take any risks but email your photos to: janine.graham@fairfaxmedia.com.au
