Organisers reported a great turn up, especially considering the wild weather conditions, for the comp held in honour of local boys Craig Dunn and Danny Lewis who were killed in the 2002 Bali bombings.
Surf conditions were as expected with howling onshore winds which turned to offshore.
A good amount of swell, a bit lumpy, with a couple of peaks separating the bodyboarding from the surfing divisions.
All competitors did well across the day, making for some action packed finals.
Under 17s Bodyboarders final had Dean Perosh, Tom Harley, Zach Self and Stirling Banks competing.
Highest scoring wave was from Zach with a 6.5 after doing a roll off the lip and a spin.
DK final was between Chris Hayward, Liam Glass, Andrew Fitch and Wade Barwick. Conditions made the selection of waves difficult.
Just to get up on the board and catch a wave was a battle.
The best wave score was Andrew Fitch with a 5.
Open finals consisted of Damien Martin, Liam Glass, Dean Pitt and Nick Smith.
Damo managed some solid spins and rolls.
Nick on his first wave did a radical roll off the lip giving him a 6 and Liam doing two inverts giving him a 5.5 and 7.
Final positions were:
Under 17 Surfers: 1. Kipp Kaddy, 2. Taj Lukas, 3. Sam Guerit, 4. Ben Munyard
Open Surfers: 1. Sam Walklate, 2. Kipp Caddy, 3. Elliot Marshall, 4. Jackson Nyball
Under 17s Bodyboarders: 1. Zach Self, 2. Stirling Banks, 3. Dean Perosh, 4. Tom Harley
Dk: 1. Andrew Fitch, 2. Chris Hayward, 3. Liam Glass, 4. Wade Barwick
Open Bodyboarder: 1. Liam Glass, 2. Nick Smith, 3. Damien Martin, 4. Dean Pitt
In recent years a new award has been handed out in memory of Ulladulla’s Jay ‘Devo’ Devos a local legend and inspiration that was taken too early.
The High Flyer Award went to Ivan Kepp Hales for being an all-round solid competitor and just a great guy.
The competitors would like to thank Gayle Dunn for her continual work with organising this event every year.
This was the 10th year it has been running and could possibly be the last.
Hopefully there a few locals who are willing to get in there and keep this event going.
Organisers would like to say a massive thanks to Kent at Southern Man, Kurt and Mat at Akwa Surf in Milton, Juz Tint, Ulladulla Boardriders and Ulladulla Bodyboarders, the judges, the ladies on the barbceue and every single person or company who has helped out over the past 10 years.
Finally thank you to all contestants and congratulations to the finalists.
The next Ulladulla Bodyboarders contest is on this Sunday, March 11, 7.30am at Rennies.
The club is still taking registrations for the year, so if you haven’t registered please do so on Sunday.
