Predicted water restrictions might not be a worry any more.
Now is a good time to plant a new vegetable crop and to put in those beautiful bulbs that will appear in the spring.
Ulladulla and Districts Garden Club is famous for its’ coffee mornings.
The second coffee morning for the year on March 7 was held at the spectacular property, of Peter Hoy and Anna Rosen called Petanna Gardens.
More than 60 members attended and were shown not only a magnificent garden but also feasted on a delicious morning tea.
Their two-storey mud brick home is located on three acres of country garden styled with ideas from France and the arts and crafts movement.
These mornings give members a chance to get to know each other and learn interesting facts about plants and gardens.
As members walked around Peter’s garden they saw an unusual tree called the Medlar tree.
Do you know about the Medlar fruit?
Not many people do.
The Medlar is thought to have originated in the Middle East centuries ago.
The gardens are set amongst 25 acres along Woodburn Road and features many interesting native and exotic trees and plants.
Garden club members are reminded that further payments are now due for the Hunter Valley trip in August/September this year.
The club will be visiting the spectacular Hunter Valley Gardens Festival of Flowers.
This event includes fabulous entertainment, activities, attractions, demonstrations, talks, tours and workshops.
Of course we can’t visit the Hunter Valley without including a winery or two plus so much more.
There are still places available on this trip so please put your name on the list at the meeting or contact Debbie Kendall on 4455 2309.
The plant of the month for the April meeting is the Abutilon.
The competition is the best arrangement of a living gift for Mother’s Day.
Last month’s competition winners were Yvonne Byatt, Jeanette Walker and Sheila Tracey.
The lucky door prize winner was Bev Hellier.
After days of rain, the sun shone and 47 members went on a trip to Shoalhaven Heads on Wednesday.
They also visited the Curtis Park Arboretum and Sanctuary Point Nursery.
The day also included a visit to the Bonsai at the Bay Nursery in Woollamia.
Owner, Mason Keane, gave an enthusiastic demonstration on how to create a bonsai and we really appreciated his expertise and were impressed with his wonderful bonsai collection.
The day finished with a stop at the Sanctuary Point Nursery.
Keep May 14 free so that you can visit the Kioloa community gardens and have coffee at the Sussmans.
To celebrate the Garden Club’s birthday, members will be travelling to the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Sunday, July 6, to enjoy a performance of Chicago.
Cost is $75 per person and includes lunch and the show.
Deposits for this trip are due at the next meeting.
The long weekend in October is the open garden weekend that will showcase many of the beautiful gardens in the local area.
All money raised will go to the Milton Hospital Auxiliary to help furnish the proposed renal unit.
A monthly newsletter helps members with gardening tips and keeps them up to date with club activities.
Members with email addresses are reminded that they can have the newsletter sent to them, arriving a few days before the meeting.
The group has coffee mornings and bus trips throughout the year with competitions, trading tables, prizes and great tea and coffee at our monthly meetings. All for $1 entry.
Come and enjoy a friendly Monday morning with the garden club at St Martins Church Hall. The next general meeting will be Monday, April 28.
Doors open at 9am for a 9.30am start.
