Mrs Hancock announced Tuesday’s State Budget included $3 million to complete planning works for the long awaited replacement of the causeway.
She told the Times that she was “confident that further funds can be secured in the future to commence construction as a matter of urgency”.
“The replacement of the Princes Highway bridge over Burrill Lake is my top priority for the Southern Shoalhaven and will improvement safety for motorists and pedestrians as well as ensure the health of Burrill Lake itself,” Mrs Hancock added.
The Burrill Lake community has been lobbying for a new bridge for more than 20 years, with the Roads and Maritime Services set to construct a 290 metre long bridge spanning the lake on a new alignment to the east of the existing causeway.
As well as a new bridge, RMS plans to construct roundabouts on either side of the crossing to connect the Princes Highway to local roads and a pedestrian and cycle path.
There will be pedestrian paths underneath both ends of the new bridge, providing five locations where pedestrians can safely cross the highway.
The new bridge and highway would be higher than the future one in 100 year flood level and reduce the impact of flooding, with the existing causeway and bridge to be completely removed.
RMS believes the new bridge will improve the overall reliability of the Princes Highway on the South Coast by reducing future maintenance issues and improve road safety by providing new intersections to modern safety standards connecting the highway to local roads.
Mrs Hancock said, securing funds for the bridge was a big win for the region.
