Members of the year 12 formal committee have been busy preparing for the November 6 celebration to be held in the newly renovated Ulladulla Civic Centre.
Year coordinator Michael Ramsden said it was great to have students organising their own formal.
He said the committee was taking control of everything from invitations and decorations to food and entertainment.
Students have met with the civic centre manager Tim Went and also with catering and decorating businesses in town.
Laura Marsland has taken on the role as formal coordinator and said the job was giving her an insight into event management, a career that she was considering pursuing.
“It involves being organised, working in a team and requires a lot of patience,” she said.
“We still have a lot to do, but it is going to be so much fun.”
Abi Crane created the formal invitations and gave a presentation to her year suggesting the decorating theme be based around the Great Gatsby movie, which was well received.
“It’s going to be so elegant and classy,” she said.
Both girls agreed allowing students to have an input into the formal gave them ownership and made them feel proud of the event.
The committee has been working with year 11 entertainment students who will manage the sound and lighting, as well as the year 11 photography students who will capture formal and social images during the event.
Mr Ramsden said the students were “doing a fantastic job” and would gain valuable skills organising the large event for 400 guests in the new civic centre auditorium.
