All good things must end, like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the last mouthful of t-bone steak or shaving off a bushy beard, this incredible run of surf with off shore winds finally expired.
There were waves but, being so spoilt for choice over the last month, surfers had a bit of a nonchalant approach to the coastal regions.
This pretty much lead to empty line ups in the water for the guys who still need to be immersed in saltwater no matter what.
Good news on the horizon is the waves should have an inviting bounce back to solid form by the end of the week so be ready.
Nicole Jones has been splitting her time up between snow fields and the beach quite a lot lately.
With the snow season having one of its best starts for a very long time, Nic has put surfing a bit on the back burner but, just like sitting in the middle seat of car, there comes a time to say “no I have had enough”.
This past week Nic placed the sand firmly beneath her feet and paddled out to one of her favoured spots down the coast.
Surfers believing the waves were no existent gave way to an almost empty line up where Nicole could practice her carving skill on water instead of ice, which is much softer to fall into when experiencing a dreaded wipe-out that often comes a-calling on us surfer folk.
During the week the Junior NSW State Titles where held up in Port Macquarie and a motley crew of grommet surfers from our area embarked on the area to compete and dominate the way the South Coast has a tenancy of doing,
The boys performed well in the early stages but the waves eventually seemed to steer in the direction of their competitors, it was Chad Elkins who faired best in the boys and made it as far as the quarter finals but our ladies was where we really shined brightly with Tess Mawson shredding her way to 4th place and Rubie Reents coming in at 5th.
With this enormous result both the gurfer girls have made their way to the Australian titles held in Yallingup; Western Australia later in the year, so well done guys you have made us all proud.
A reminder for all that Ulladulla Boardriders will be holding their event this coming Sunday meeting at Rennies Beach 7.30am.
With the waves looking pretty good at this stage we could see some more epic conditions for surfers.
So far this year we have had some of the best surf we have experienced for UBC with one of the most memorable being the perfect but challenging 8-15ft Golf Course mega day where the swell rose so fast and thick it was like would of shocked the eyebrows off the Muppet character Aggro.
All new and old members welcome.
As stated previously all surfing eyes were watching NRMA NSW Junior State Titles.
This week the Under-16 and Under-18 champions were crowned in punchy one-to-two foot beach break peaks at Lighthouse Beach Port Macquarie.
Jackson Giles (Maroubra) fought a hard battle with fellow event standout Kalani Ball (Stanwell Park) to take out the Under-18 Boys NRMA NSW State Title.
Both surfers locked in a series of excellent scores and until the final five minutes Ball looked set to take the title, however Giles was able to sneak past his fellow competitor with an impressive 6.87 wave score (out of a possible ten points) and claim the prestigious win.
Holly Wawn (Newport) bagged her third NSW Junior Title in as many years when she took down an all-star cast in the final of the Under-18 Girls.
Wawn, managed to link together a chain of stylish and technically sound forehand snaps to lock in a 16.83 heat total (out of a possible 20 points), which consequently left her fellow competitors in a combination situation.
Runner-up Paris Whittaker (Caringbah) put up a valiant fight in the tightly contested final, but ultimately fell short, while Kobie Enright (Tweed Heads) claimed third and Tess Mawson (Manyana) finished in fourth.
