Milton’s Di Woods will cut the purple ribbon in memory of her husband Ralph, signalling the start of the relay at Ulladulla’s Lighthouse Oval on Saturday morning.
During the opening ceremony at 9am, survivors and carers, including Lani Fisher, Cara Brennan, Tim Gregory, Sue Williams, Frank Harper, Karen Brook and Ro Smith, will share their stories with a poem, while Sam Watkins will carry on his tradition of reading the relay oath.
Heidi Brook will be remembered when her children present an award in her honour, while the family and friends of Vernessa Richards have invited all participants to join them for a special green lap.
Relay coordinator Caz Boland said the event was a chance for people to come together and share their memories and stories of survival and hope.
She said the opening, closing and candelight ceremonies were always emotional.
During the candlelight ceremony, a slideshow of those who have been taken by cancer will be followed by one minute’s silence before the lights are dimmed and relayers walk a lap lit by candlebags to the moving sound of didgeridoos spread around the venue.
“It’s a really emotional time and a moving tribute to remember those lost to cancer,” she said.
Caz said it was not too late for people to get involved by joining a team online, sponsoring a participant or going along to the Lighthouse Oval between 9am and 8pm on Saturday as proceeds from stalls, raffles, rides and activities would go to the relays coffers.
