The club’s pre-loved bookstore is this week celebrating its first birthday and Lions members are also overjoyed about raising $45,000 for the Jindelara Respite Care appeal since the doors opened in Bellbrook Arcade.
Bookstore co-chair Jann Wayland said the shop’s success could not have been possible without the support of the community.
“The support we have had since the shop opened on August 31 last year has been tremendous,” she said.
“People have been so generous in giving us beautiful, good quality, clean books and they have been walking out the door.”
Mrs Wayland said the pre-loved bookstore sold up to 100 books per day, with prices ranging from 25 cents to $5.
She said the shop sold a variety of books from novels, classics and health books to children’s classics.
“The biggest sellers are the crime stories,” she added.
When the Lions Club decided to open the shop, it was with great trepidation because members were not sure how it would be received by the community, due to the popularity of e-books
“But it has been more successful that we ever could have imagined,” Mrs Wayland said.
“People still want to read a real book - there’s nothing better than laying in the sun or on your bed with a good book.
“Not only do we make enough money to cover our rent, but we have raised so much money for Jindelara.
“It’s just perfect - we couldn’t have asked for a better response.”
The Lions Pre-loved Bookstore is run by 18 volunteers and is open from 9am until 4.30pm weekdays and 9am until 12.30pm on Saturdays.
The shop accepts good quality, clean books for resale and people are invited to pop in during the week of first birthday celebrations and look through the 5,000 books on the shelves and meet the volunteers.
