Big waves of course.
Oh, and the promise of expert training that will give them an edge in their upcoming competitions.
Aidan Lewand-Parsons, Charlie Brophy, Koby Jackson, Claire Brophy, Luke O’Connell and Zane Stedman have were all selected to take part in a four-week intensive surfing course, where they meet once a week to learn tips and skills that will help them take their competition to the next level.
Local boardmaker Vern Jackson got together with Walking on Water and Ulladulla Surf Schools owner Simon Twitchen to identify the six young surfing prodigies, aged between six to 15 years-old, who were then asked to take part in the new XLR8 program, at nearly no cost.
A former UK JSC Masters Champion, Simon said the program combined theory and practical experience designed to give local young surfers a head start.
“I just wanted kids who were passionate enough to do it and willing to put in the effort. Basically kids who were frothing to get involved,” he said.
“Because I can coach them, but at the end of the day they have got to have a passion for the sport and want to get better.
“They will learn stuff about competition that you don’t usually learn in a usual surf school, unless it is a specialised clinic.
“Some kids have to travel to Queensland, or Sydney at least to get this kind of tuition, but we are doing it right here.”
The group met for the first time on September 3 at Collers, but because of the dangerous conditions, were a part of a theory-based lesson.
Simon tutored them on speed, body rotation and movement, how to go faster, turn harder and how to use their body to limit wipe outs.
There was even homework, although not the boring kind.
“It was basically a bit of mental imagery homework, studying frame by frame the right position you need to be in,” Simon said.
At six-years-old Koby is the youngest in the group, but already shows incredible promise in the sport, tackling six foot waves and winning the under 12s age group of the Ulludulla Boardriders.
Koby looks up to Kelly Slater and said his favourite surf spot was G-Land in Bali, Indonesia.
Aiden, 13, has been surfing since he was six-years-old and his favourite local haunt is Flat Rock.
The Ulladulla High School student has had a big year in surfing, winning his divisions in the Christian Surfers Ulladulla Winter competition, and South Coast Challenge, as well as finishing third in All Schools and will compete at the BL’s Blast Off this week.
“I hope to get better and extend my knowledge of surfing,” he said.
Charlie, 14, has been surfing for seven years and is a reserve for the BL’s Blast Off.
He said he is interested to learn what to do with his body’s power.
“But I really enjoy surfing with my mates and can’t wait to see the video back,” he said.
Claire, 11, was the only girl in the program but is out there to learn new skills and possibly show up the boys.
“It’s a hard one, but I try,” she laughed.
“My whole family are surfers and my dad makes boards so it has always been a thing for me,” she added.
Claire competes in the local boardriders and also placed fifth in NSW for her age group in a competition held at Port Macquarie.
Her favourite surfing spots include The Hook, Collers and Golf Course.
“I reckon we are pretty lucky to live down here because we have got so many varieties of waves,” she said.
Luke, 12, likes to surf Flat Rock and has big surfing ambitions.
“Maybe make it to WCT and even win a world title,” he said.
“But right now I would like to learn how to surf better I competitions and improve my surfing.”
Zane, 13, got into the sport through his father, who was also a surfer.
Zane has also has his sights set on BL’s Blast Off, although he couldn’t pick his favourite local surfing spot.
“Just everywhere around here. There are so many spots. It is a good place to grow up,” he said.
Simon said the XLR8 program was just a beginning for these surfers, but depending on the experience level of the group and further interest, he is open to run it again.
