The charity surf tag team event at Mollymook Reef was a great success, raising over $13, 000 for the ongoing treatment and improving the life of Liam Blakey.
Liam, 14, was flown to Randwick Children’s Hospital on April 12 after suffering a seizure.
The fit, healthy teenager had been surfing with his twin brother Joel during the day but his life was turned upside down when the seizure struck out of the blue
Liam was placed on life support and he was diagnosed with autoimmune post-viral encephalitis, a rare neurological condition.
A crowd of surfers and spectators turned up on Sunday’s charity competition to support Liam, only to get pounded on the sucky one foot shoreys.
It was a fine attempt by all teams to crack the bank, however there were flashes of 70s style and magic with the highlights from the Blakey brothers themselves.
Joel’s classic switch foot manoeuvre slotted a perfect 10 from one judge and Caleb styled his way into the right-handers down the beach with some smooth carves, their brother Liam no doubt spiriting them along.
Also exciting the crowd was the rare set of waves, heaps of drop-ins, nose dives and face plants.
Kurt managed get pulled into the sandy shore pit, Charlie was all over the soul arch and Luke went for the handstand move.
Parso, Ruffo and Marsupial did a fine job on the judging panel and the final result was a close encounter with Talking Heads winning the event over The Who and The Clash.
On land, Don Steadman had the crowd in stitches with his 360 fall down the hill.
Katrina Wooden won the silent auction of the Kirk Bierke hand shaped single fin.
Best outfits among the crew were Pete “Jimmy Hendrix” Meyers and Jason “Bullfrog” Evans’ full satin get-up.
Zane Steadman was absolutely stoked to win the Barrenjoey boat trip.
Annaye, Serena and the Blakey family thanked the many friends, surfers, businesses and individuals who gave their support, time, money, collective offerings and donations for the charity day.
The family thanked all those who baked, manned the barbecue and supplied food and beverages, Kiah for selling flowers and Tim for the amazing 70’s vibes.
