THE area’s best and brightest young sportsmen and sportswomen gathered at the Dunn Lewis Centre on September 15 to receive their Local Sporting Champion grants presented by federal member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis.

The Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance for young people aged 12 to 18 towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation endorsed state, national or international sporting championships or a School Sport Australia state or national championships.
Grants of $500 are available for successful individual applicants and can contribute towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment for your participation at the nominated championships.
This year’s successful applicants were Matthew Gilkes (School Sport Australia, cricket), Aidan Woods (State Showjumping Equitation), Taryn Love (18s Touch National Youth Championships), Tess Mawson (NSW State Junior Surfing Titles), Cassie Fortune (National Interschool Snowsports), Russell Fortune (National Interschool Snowsports), Travis Wooden (Australian All Students Cross Country), Chelsea Oaten (National Cycling Titles), Aaron Taylor (NSW CHS Baseball State Championships), Amy Wilson (2014 National Youth Archery Championships), Jarrod Wilson (2014 National Youth Archery Championships), Justin Millsom (Australian Hansa Championships, sailing), Adam Rusgnach (Australian National Championships, gymnastics), Rihanna Brown (National Youth Championships for Girls, soccer), Lily Ryan (U13 Girls Football).
