The Mollymook Turf Club attracted 42 sponsors for the Mollymook Cup meeting on Sunday, October 19 at Nowra’s Archer Raceway.
This was above the normal cut-off of 40, but Rob Powell explained a couple of the previous sponsors had been away when the first approaches were made, and replied after all spots had been filled so he decided to add them in because they had been long-term supporters.
As a result “we’re fully packed,” Rob said.
The names of all sponsors were placed on balls in a box, and one by one seven were pulled out to coincide with the seven races on the card for the day.
There were also seven horse trophies on display, with tapes covering the names of which race they represented.
Times editor Glenn Ellard was invited to draw one of the names from the box, and pulled out South Coast Business and Financial Solutions, which had been a sponsor of the race meeting for the past 15 years.
Karen Bashford from the financial consultancy then managed to choose the right trophy to gain naming rights for the main race.
The full list of races for the day is:
The South Coast Business and Financial Solutions Mollymook Cup.
The Sarah Gabrielle Boutique Eddie Latta Memorial.
The Dovetail Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 2 Handicap over 1400 metres.
The Ulladulla Chinese Restaurant Fillies and Mares Class 2 Handicap over 1400 metres.
The Hozack Clisdell Lawyers Maiden Plate over 1400 metres.
The Ulladulla ExServos Club Maiden Handicap over 1200 metres.
The Home At Last Benchmark 55 Handicap over 1600 metres.
Karen Bashford had another win on the night, claiming second prize in a lucky draw card game, although the $500 first prize went to Sally Stewart.
The sponsors night at the Mollymook Golf Club also saw a new wine variety unveiled, with each sponsor given a bottle of Verscato from Cambewarra Estate, described as a semi-sweet, semi-sparkling wine in the style in Moscato but using Verdelho grapes rather than Muscat,.
Sponsors for the race day will have added benefits including advertising before the day, being listed in a race book, bus transports to and from the race meeting, and admission to a hospitality tent.
Buses will also be available to take local people to and from the event.
