THIS week saw the mixed pairs combinations get down towards the pointy end of the competition with the quarter-finals being played and won in four tight games. All teams played some wonderful bowls and each team had their opportunities to take their respective matches but unfortunately there had to be a loser. Sandra Crimmins and Dennis Ogilvie hung on to win 21-19 against Lanie Graham and Brad Patterson; Jan Winter and Ray Hutchinson got away from Doreen Dixon and Graham James to take the game 22-13; The Hathaways had a hard fought game against Ralda Graham and Graeme Carriage and got over the line for a 17-14 win; and Jeannie Thompson and Eric Bell had a ding-dong battle with Kath and Ian Fraser before running out winners 20-17.

THE semi-final of the minor singles championship was played last Saturday and was close.
Recently new to the club, David Neil showed his talent against Craig Lees. Both bowlers it seems are not adverse to the occasional aggressive on-shot in a singles match. But David prevailed, winning 31-26.
The other match was even closer; greenkeeper Tom Wilson, rapidly becoming a not-so-unknown quantity, against experienced bowler Brian Church. The scores see-sawed throughout the match but were tied at 29-all after 33 ends after Brian had fought back from being 29-24 down on the 31st. But two good bowls from Tom on the last end won the day.
The final next Saturday after the week's carnival should be an enthralling game.
Social triples were also played on Saturday & saw an un-invited guest in the form of a spider try to get into the game.
After it was removed from Terry Hill's back, he regained colour and played on but the drop-spider probably cost the Adamson, Hill, Lenton team a win as they went down 19-18 against Edmunds, Wicken and Dwyer. Lucky rink winners were the Menace, Crabbas and Tony Annettts.
