Gardens are reliant on not only plenty of rain, but plants also thrive when the sun is shining.
To hold a successful open gardens weekend there needed to be plenty of sunshine – and there was.
Seven local gardens were showcased during the long weekend in October. Their owners had enthusiastically and lovingly laboured for weeks to get each garden into top shape.
The new Civic Centre also displayed many ideas from local community groups including the farmers markets from Cupitts Winery to a giant raffle and trading table for the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary.
All proceeds from the weekend will help with the new Renal Unit at Milton Hospital.
At the September meeting garden club members acknowledged the 20-year membership of four enthusiastic gardeners.
These four ladies, Joan Barnsley, Daryl Bishop, Buzz Tucker and Hazel McVicar were honoured with a special pendant and a scrumptious morning tea.
The competition winners for September, exhibiting spring blooms were Sheila Gallant, Dawne Graham and Yvonne Byatt.
Lucky door prize winner was Debbie Kendall.
Trading table winners were Rhonda Spry and Graeme Oke.
The plant of the month for the October 27 meeting is Penstemons.
The competition is “A Perfect Single Bloom”.
The October guest speaker is arborist Patrick Falkner, who will tell members all about the Avenue of Honour at Milton.
It is with great sadness that members say goodbye to Bob and Nessie Garven.
As health and welfare officers they have kept the club informed of any member who is not feeling well.
They will be returning to Canberra to be closer to their family.
The club will also miss the quiet company of long-time members Shirley and Colin Campbell, who are also moving to Canberra.
Members are reminded that the Dunn Lewis Centre gardening morning is Wednesday, October 29.
If you need fresh air and an easy walk, there is always a guided bushwalk of the wildflower garden, Warden Street in Ulladulla on the first of every month at 10am.
The next Bunnings barbecue is on Sunday, November 2. If you are unable to help, come along and buy a delicious sausage sandwich for lunch.
It’s all the way south on Tuesday, November 18.
First stop is morning tea at the property of Sue and Dick Caine at Termeil.
Put on your glasses and walking shoes and as you go around their beautiful gardens it’s a “spot the gnome” competition.
Next stop is Mogo village with lunch at the Tomakin Sports and Social Club.
The last stop is at the Batemans Bay garden centre, Bushy’s Bloomin Things on the way home.

The club has coffee mornings and bus trips throughout the year with competitions, trading tables, prizes and great tea and coffee at the monthly meetings.
