The popular walk on Ulladulla Harbour’s rock platform is set to go ahead over the summer holidays, however guides are urgently needed.
Walk president Phil Smart said while the attraction had up to 30 volunteer guides in the past, the numbers had dwindled to about 15 due to ill health and work commitments.
He is keen to train new guides in the lead up to summer when the walks are popular with school and community groups, as well as local and holidaying families.
“You don’t need any formal geological or other form of scientific training to be a guide,” Mr Smart said.
“All volunteers will be fully trained and go out with other trained guides.
“Anyone with an interest in learning more about our wonderful natural world class heritage, right on our doorstep, would make a great guide.”
Mr Smart said he would be conducting training courses in the next few weeks for anyone interested.
“The course is very much hands-on, conducted over two four-hour sessions and time is spent down on the rock platform,” he said.
“People learn a lot of skills and really get a lot of satisfaction from showing people our local geological attractions.”
The fossil walk attracts hundreds of visitors every summer and Mr Smart said volunteers were needed to ensure it could cater for the many groups expected in the next few months.
“The Gondwana Coast Fossil Walk has developed an excellent reputation as an outdoor activity that is both great fun and very educational,” he explained.
“Summer is almost upon us and that is our busiest season.”
A display and information centre has been set up in Rowen’s Arcade in Ulladulla’s central business district which has been attracting a lot of interest and is being manned by University of the Third Age volunteers.
Mr Smart said despite the group’s previous home on the harbour, being destroyed by fire just over a year ago, the walk continued to thrive.
Anyone interested in volunteering as a guide, should contact Mr Smart as soon as possible on 0408 588 166 or email philsmart@westnet.com.au
He said group tours of the new Time Walk in Brodie Park could also be conducted on request.
