Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and they would continue to investigate, while preparing a report for the coroner.
Police are also appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
2.50pm: The Police crime scene unit is on the scene and investigations into the woman's death are continuing. The rocky area was covered in slippery weed.
2.30pm: The South Coast support operations jet ski crew based at Mollymook Surf Club was requested by the police to retrieve the body with the assistance of Lifesaver 3 helicopter. The jetski driver was Glenn Matthews assisted by Adam Woodward.
2.20pm: The body pulled from the ocean near Dolphin Point has been confirmed as a female, despite initial reports that it was a male. Police said the woman was probably aged around 70 years and was from the local area. The fully clothed body was first spotted at about 11am.
1.45pm: A surf rescue jet ski team has retrieved the body of a male found floating in the water near Dolphin Point this morning. The Westpac Lifesaver helicopter dropped a flare to guide the rescue crew to the body. The retrieval was made difficult by rough conditions.
1.15pm: According to Steve Jones from Surf Life Saving NSW, the body was discovered 250m off shore.
He said the Marine Area Command had dispatched a vessel from its base at Port Kembla to recover the body.
Meanwhile discussions are under way between local lifesavers and police to secure a buoy to the body before it sinks.
The Westpac helicopter flew up from Moruya but has since left the scene.
Burrill Beach was the scene of another tragedy in January when British holiday maker Andrew Priestley drowned while rescuing his two sons who had been caught in a rip.
Mr Priestley's widow Amanda has been pleading with Shoalhaven City Council to erect signs warning of the dangers of swimming in the area.
12.45pm: The body of a man may have been in the water for some time and is yet to be retrieved. Heavy swell in the cove south of the entrance to Burrill Lake is preventing the Ulladulla Marine Rescue vessel from getting close to the body. Water Police are en route to the incident. Police fear the body could be lost if is not pulled from the water soon.
12.25pm: Mystery surrounds a body that has washed up on Burrill Beach this morning.
The body was found floating in the water near Dolphin Point.
Police have told life savers not to touch the body and the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter is on the scene.
