A sign outside a British pub: “Jokes about German sausage are the wurst.”
THE mixed triples final resumed on Friday afternoon after a deluge stopped play last Sunday after eight ends, the score being 10-2 in favour of the John Wilton, Lyn Newton and Ron Wynter.
Their opponents Geoff Weeks, Trish Moy and Jeff Tierney fought back steadily and eventually reached 18-all on the 20th end.
There were some brilliant bowls played by both teams that kept the gallery enthralled and it was anyone’s guess who would take the final.
A close shot from the Wilton team early in the last end was well protected when Geoff took the mat but the shot bowl survived.
Final score 19-18. Noteworthy is the fact John, Lyn and Ron have now won this championship three times in the last four years, albeit this is the first time Ron has had his nose in a splint for the event.
The semi-final results of the veterans pairs saw a tenacious win by Barry Webb and Keith Crabtree over John Wilton and Brian Stanmore.
The match was won by the last bowl of the last tie-break end.
In the other match the Wynters prevailed over Tony Hutchins and Roy Sinclair in two sets.
The semi-final of the vets singles resulted in a two set win to John Wilton versus Roy Sinclair and a narrow victory to Alan Wynter versus Keith Crabtree with a 9-8 win in the first set and a 6-all draw on the second.
A minor pairs game was played on Saturday. After David Neil and Mike Ricketts d Robin Oke and Mick Dundas the week before Dave had to find a substitute for the next round due to work commitments.
Mike went to skip and David Adamson took the lead slot.
The combination resulted in a 22-18 win over Chris Machon and Keith Crabtree.
Social games included Mark Jones from Glenbrook, who enhanced the Jones brothers’ team, and Errol Montifiore and his son-in-law Joe Doyle from Ingleburn.
They made up the Montifiore clan team with Alan as skip, however sadly their only claim to fame was the winning of two meat trays in the raffle. Lucky rink winners went to a 21-all draw between Kevin Edmunds, David White, Peter Lenton and Alan Hapgood, Terry Hill and Tony Annetts.
The nominated triples jackpot was played on Wednesday with the usual gourmet barbecue between the AM and PM games and with visitors from Mosman, Milton-Ulladulla and Lake Conjola. The not inconsiderable jackpot eluded all.
Next month it should be around the $600 mark so book early.
Lucky rink winners were David White, Brian Stanmore and Doug Broad who happened to have a 21-17 win over Peter Lenton, Brian Lambert and George Foster.
The $200 medley pairs were played on Friday, November 21.
The big prize money went to Nick King and Bob Brooks with a considerable score of plus 15 on the five random rinks. The $15 KENO voucher was claimed by Whitey and Struan. Pennants trials this Saturday from 9.30am.
Cheers to all!
