Flashing lights have been installed in Thomas Street outside Milton Public School.
The solar powered flashing lights will warn drivers to slow down to 40 kilometres an hour during school pick up and drop off times.
The lights were installed on Friday morning and were welcomed by principal Mark Thomson and P and C president Mel Wills who has been leading the charge for increased student safety around the school.
Milton Public, St Mary’s Star of the Sea Primary School and Budawang School were among 1,500 schools across the state to receive funding for school zone flashing lights.
The State Government’s funding announcement came last year only days after a child was almost struck by a car while using the flagged crossing outside Milton Public School.
At the time Mrs Wills said the near miss was not uncommon and the P and C had been lobbying for flashing lights for many years.
“Thomas Street is becoming more and more congested in the mornings and afternoons and the bottom line is that we just want our students to arrive safely to school and to get home safely,” she said.
The P and C is continuing to lobby Shoalhaven City Council for additional drop-off zones near the school and the removal of bus zones that are no longer used in Thomas Street.
