In fact learning about research being conducted at the large hadron collider in Switzerland, on how the universe originated, is exactly what David will be doing in August- not typically something you would associate with a high school student.
The Ulladulla High School student will travel to London later this year, to participate in the London International Youth Science Forum. In the process, he has established himself as one of the brightest young scientific minds Australia has to offer.
He was selected to attend after a gruelling application and selection process that followed the Australian National Youth Science forum in Canberra, earlier this year.
He is one of 10 students from around the country who will represent Australia at the forum along with 400 other students from around the world.
David will also participate in one of the optional tours to Switzerland, to learn more about the Large Hadron Collider and the research being conducted about the origins of the universe.
“I have always been interested in science,” David said.
“ I have been attending the CSIRO holiday camps since I was about five.”
The forum is a two week residential event held at Imperial College London.
There will be lectures, demonstrations, visits to world class science based sites and institutions and the chance to learn from some of the world’s leading scientists.
Given that he will be travelling to London so close to his HSC exams in October, David is in the process of gaining approval for his leave of absence and organising work through his teachers so he can stay up to date with his study while overseas.
David is not too worried about missing the time at school, and neither are his teachers.
“By attending the National and International Youth Science Forums, David already made himself known to the Australian National University,” said David’s science teacher, Josh Westerway.
Next year, David hopes to study a combined degree in science and commerce, majoring in physics.
“I would like to think the Milton Ulladulla Rotary Club and my teachers, specifically Josh Westerway and Donna Miles for their support,” said David.
David will be fundraising to help with the cost of his study trip to London and Switzerland.
