Children gathered at the Milton Public School this morning for a scarecrow making workshop to help get a head start on their scarecrows for the festival that will be held on the June long weekend.
“I am going to make mine a fairy,” said Lily Felton.
“Mine might be Anzac themed” said Darcie Schultz.
“I am making mine old lady because the festival is vintage themed,” said Austin Felton.
Organiser of the festival, Bedelia Wilson, said that the workshop was about getting everyone started on their scarecrows for the festival and giving kids something to do in the school holidays.
“It is about teaching people how to make vintage themed scarecrows,” said workshop helper, Maddison Condie.
Bedelia explained to the children, about the first scarecrow that she made, and about the history of scarecrows.
She then went on to explain how they were going to make their own scarecrows for the festival.
Many of the children had never done paper mache before, and that was the first task in today’s workshop.
Constructing the head required children to blow up balloons and paper mache them, before adding mop heads, straw or other hair like material.
When Bedelia showed everyone an articulated frame, there was a lot of excitement.
Each child went home today with their own frame, a bag of straw, and the beginnings of a family scarecrow. The next event in the scarecrow festival schedule will be the scarecrow ball on May 30. Tickets will go on sale at the end of this month.
