The Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club will host the event in partnership with the Shoalhaven Council, as part of an effort to attract large sporting events to the area.
“We like hosting these big events,” said Rodney Austin, president of the Mollymook Surf Club.
“They showcase not just our beach, but also our district,” he said.
While the championships will be an opportunity for the club to fundraise, it will have a flow on effect in the community, with people staying, eating and sightseeing in the area.
“Motels will have people in them in the middle of winter,” said Rodney.
“The club has an excellent track record for larger events like this,” he said.
IRB racing can only be held in smaller swells, and Mollymook beach can either be placid, or producing highly competitive surf.
The club plans to utilise other parts of the beach, Narrawallee or one of the lakes, if the surf is unsuitable for competition.
While there will be no teams from Mollymook competing, it will be a big weekend for club members, as Mollymook SLSC will be required to have working parties on hand, and be providing a constant stream of food to officials, who will be on the beach for three days.
They will also be required to assist with boat scrutineering and ensure there is adequate parking available.
IRB racing is a technical sport designed to improve rescue skills for real life scenarios on surf patrol.
The team to watch, will be current premiership leaders, Kiama Downs.
Mollymook Surf Club is also hoping to host the Australian IRB Championships next year.
