Aboriginal dancing, African drumming, Chinese martial arts, music from Japan, Germany and France, along with food from Lebanon, India, Thailand, Italy and Ethiopia will all feature in the event Celebrating Cultural Diversity Locally.
The day has been put together by several people as part of a pilot work for the dole project, with the aim of teaching them about event management while also helping to overcome cultural divides.
“Our goal is to increase awareness, understanding and acceptance between and within our local cultural groups,” said one of the organisers, Patrick Wilson.
“We have had the help of a number of young job seekers who have all benefited from a valuable work experience.”
He said the full day of activities was all about “fun and celebration” catering for people of all ages.
The day includes food, musical performances, art and crafts and children’s activities from around the world, running from 10am to 5pm.
Entry is free.
Highlights of the day include a welcome to country and performance from Jerra Ngia at 10.30am, an opening from Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis at 11am, Desiree’s Drummers at 11.20am, local historian Cathy Dunn at noon, tai chi at 12.30pm, traditional Japanese music from Takato at 1pm, folk music from Roddy Reason at 1:30pm, a performance from Megan White at 2pm and German and French music from Bande at 3pm.
There will also be plenty of activities for youngsters including face painting throughout the day, pine cone pets from 11am to 12pm, Ulladulla High School students demonstrating Japanese calligraphy and origami from noon to 2pm, photo frames from 2pm to 3pm, a piñata at 3.10pm, and tiki masks from 3.30 to 4.30pm.
