What a crazy week. At first we finally received a sample taste of this coming summer when last Saturday turned on the warmest day we have encountered in a few months.
It was made even a little more unique when it muted with an entertaining dose of east swell and winds strayed around to the offshore position.
On Monday the wettest day in months showed up and rain pelted down with more ferocity than a sneeze after a nose full of pepper.
But how good is the swell looking this coming week and yesterday reminded us that we do have some sick reefs around that want you to surf them!
Friday morning was one to recall with a devilish grin when a long period swell built up the coast line and avenged its long awaited anger at our very own beaches.
Again it was Rennies Beach that harboured the focus of waves best.
A motley crew of grommets in the form of Charlie Brophy, Aiden Parsons, Zane Steadman and Dom Lahiff decided to maul the frequent barrels before school and it was pretty impressive to watch the boys all pushing themselves harder and harder.
Wave of the morning though came through and it was the old dog Adam Richards who was in the best position.
Adz took off late, pulled up tight and sat inside a snarling pit for a good 10 metres and then came out to the hoots of all the grommets to launch into a three foot air to casually ride out of it.
Pencil it in ladies and gentleman boys and girls, Saturday September 5 will be a day remember especially if you would like to learn anything about our scared crafts or if you're on the hunt for a new surfboard, because on this blessed Saturday we are honoured to have one of the world's leading and most sought after shapers Jamie ‘Chilli’ Cheal and local shaping legend Dylan ‘DP’ Perese working all day at Akwa surf, providing a great opportunity to meet and ask questions to a couple of shapers who create amazing boards for the best surfers around the globe.
Maxime Huscenot has won the 2015 Soöruz Lacanau Pro in an exciting final over recent Airwalk Pro Junior winner Nomme Mignot,.
Powerful three-to-five-foot surf arrived overnight to greet competitors on the final day in Lacanau, a day mostly dominated by French surfers, who occupied six out of eight quarterfinal spots.
Wasting no time in the final, Huscenot's first wave of consequence came in as an 8.50 out of 10, the highest ride of the 30-minute bout.
With an average backup score on the board, the Reunion Island native scoured the lineup and surfed a lot of waves, eventually belting a 7.10 to take the win.
Powerful backhand hacks and commitment on the closeout sections were highly rewarded by the judges.
"My first QS win, I'm super stoked," Huscenot said.
With the 3,000 ranking points collected in Lacanau, Huscenot will climb up the international rankings, edging closer to a potential qualification for the eliteSamsung Galaxy Championship Tour.
