Liz had always wanted to try her hand at property development so, when the little rental home’s roof blew off, the building was demolished and she decided to take the plunge.
Five years later an awarding winning unit development sits on the block land on the corner of North Street and Kalang Avenue.
The dual occupancy units took out the Best Multi-Unit category at the Master Builders Association Excellence in Regional Building awards, while the builder, Pat O’Donnell, won the Best New Builder accolade for the complex.
Liz said she and husband Doug were thrilled with the wins which reflected the final result.
“We are over the moon with the award and with Pat,” she said.
“He was so meticulous with everything and the whole building, from the exterior materials to the interior fixtures and fittings, is of such a high quality.”
Pat told the Times he was excited to be recognised for his first development since becoming a fully fledged builder.
“The judges were impressed with the attention to detail and the high quality of the building,” he said.
Liz said she was so impressed with Pat that she is working with him on her second project, a three-bedroom home development close to the harbour.
“I’ve always wanted to do property development and this result has validated that I can do it,” she said.
“It has also validated that my vision for this block was spot on.
“It was a lot of work to get it right, but I am so happy with the outcome.
“The building really makes the most of the position and is something different for Ulladulla.”
Liz, who has owned a number of retail and fashion stores in Ulladulla, said she enjoyed getting in at ground level and working with the tradies.
“I love choosing all the fittings, the paint, the tiles… everything,” she said.
The Kalang Avenue home features bamboo flooring, Caesarstone bench tops and top of the range appliances.
Liz said the two-story, three bedroom unit sold within three days.
