Ulladulla High School dux Lily O’Brien and Shoalhaven Anglican School dux Charlie Guerit both scored an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 95.25, resulting in a double celebration for the district.
Both students were thrilled with their result and have made plans to continue their studies at university.
Charlie is one of 25 students granted the Australian National University’s Tuckwell Scholarship which will provide him with $20,000 per year towards his double degree in Law and International Security.
It has been a challenging year for Charlie who was determined to succeed, despite battling cancer and losing a term off school while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
The son of Jo Humphries and Jean-Claude Guerit, Charlie said his ATAR result was “beyond his wildest dreams”.
“I was hoping to scrape through with a 90, so I’m extra stoked” he laughed.
“It has been a difficult year, but I had a goal and just wanted to go for it.
“The students and teachers at the school were ridiculously helpful,” he added.
Charlie has recently been given the all clear and is hoping to work in the area of international human rights law after completing his studies.
Lily said she went through her own “internal struggle” early in the year and found it hard to stay motivated, but eventually found the balance and continued on.
The Termeil teen plans to take gap year and travel through Europe before studying Advanced Science or Medical Science at ANU.
She said she needed a well-earned break after “a solid two years of study and not much else."
Lily scored a mark of 93 in Ancient History and three band six results in Ancient History, Biology and Agriculture.
She said her favourite memory of high school was “blowing stuff up in chemistry".
Charlie also gained three band six results in Modern History, Legal Studies and Geography.
Milton’s Emily Hancock was among the top HSC achievers at Nowra’s St John the Evangelist Catholic High School with an ATAR of 94.7.
