Cheyanne Hatch, Georgia Thomas, Emily Burke, Hannah Prouten, Amy Austin and Ebony Murray were all part of the undefeated South Coast Group 7 Women’s League Tag representative team in Batemans Bay at the weekend.
On the day, Group 16, 7 and 6 league tag players had two 20-minute matches to impress selectors for the first Greater Southern Region Stars side.
First up, Group 7 defeated Group 16 12-4.
Bulldogs’ Ebony Murray scored the first, before team mates Jamie Emerson and Tyler Finn both scored.
In the second game, Group 6 and 7 played to the final siren with Group 7 hanging on to win, 9-8, despite a thrilling last Group 6 field-goal fake play.
Group 7’s Alana Glasson and Carly Ryan scored tries and Ryan’s try was a highlight.
Talia Atfield kicked over the defence and Ryan caught the ball on the full, outpacing the defence to place the ball under the crossbar.
Group 16 came close to scoring, but was kept out, losing the final clash 12-nil to Group 6.
“Having watched the boys compete at a representative level for a number of years, it’s great the girls finally got a chance to showcase their talents this year,” Cheyanne Hatch said.
“It’s great that we had six girls from the club in the team, which we could have easily had more, so let’s hope we get some girls selected into the Stars side.
“It was little disappointing that we only had two 20-minutes games but it’s still great for the sport.
“Obviously the sport of league tag is growing because when I first started, there was only six teams in the Group 7 competition but now there are more than 10.
“Junior competitions have even been introduced, which provides a pathway for the girls.”
Also playing on the weekend was Bulldogs’ Boyd Brayshaw competing in the final round of the AAMI Regional Championships,
Brayshaw, in the Southern Stingray’s under 16s team, lost Saturday’s game against the Western Rams 34-10.
