This week's surf was like walking into Tony's Pizzeria and smelling all the tempting delights which causes you to simply blurt out, I'll get one with the lot! This week we had a sample of just about everything. There was a straight three-foot south swell which spun around to the east, then an eccentric south-west push which seemed to defy logic appeared briefly then finally a straight south swell pointed its poignant nose in our location. The winds were quite favourable, with the exception of near freezing air temp, we again can be thankful for another solid week of waves.
Saturday was a bit of a fizzer. With websites predicting a big swell and off shore winds, the community was alive with a premonition promise. However it was Sunday that delivered the goods but the levels of froth had started to gurgle louder than a 1940's toilet. The amount of surfers on the hunt was pretty mind blowing as the popularity of our town grows and the evidence was Horseshoe Bay where surfers were climbing over the top of each other to paddle into the next wave. The increased line up caused a few headaches for some, but it was the local guys who continued to dominate every set wave that came in. Sam wrench, Elliot Marshall, Nathan Marks and Jack Nybal spent quality time in the tube but it was new dad Charlton Fogarty who sat at the end of the peak and snuck under the radar by getting tube after tube on the end section whilst the 30+ on the peak wrestled, argued and got in each others way.
Ulladulla Boardriders will be holding their monthly event meeting at 7.30am at Rennies Beach. With a decent swell on the cards it could be a fantastic event. New and old member's welcome.
South African, Grant 'Twiggy' Baker has taken out the first event of the 2016/17 World Surf League Big Wave Tour, the Puerto Escondido Challenge. Twenty to thirty-feet of the billowing South Pacific made the beach break known as the 'Mexican Pipeline' the perfect event site for the inaugural big wave event. Baker was the injury wildcard but is not new to the area, admitting to visiting for the last 20 years. He put on an impressive show throughout both days of competition. It was a perfect 10.00 awarded for escaping a massive tube that cemented his victory. The 2013/14 Big Wave Champion's final combined score was an impressive 27.50 out of a possible 30. Puerto Escondido Challenge Final Results: 1 - Grant Baker (ZAF) 27.50, 2 - Greg Long (USA) 25.03, 3 - Pedro Calado (BRA) 24.77, 4 - Carlos Burle (BRA) 16.87 5 - Will Skudin (USA) 12.97 6 - Makuakai Rothman (HAW) 7.66.
