Kieren has been undergoing intensive treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma since June last year.
Until last week all the signs pointed to improvement, however the cancer has returned more aggressively than ever, invading his brain and spinal cord.
Kieren’s dad said he knew something was wrong when Kieren was feeling tired more often and had started getting headaches again.
“We were called in to see the oncologist urgently last Thursday,” Kieren’s dad, Warren Thomas-Thompson said.
“We knew it was bad. The doctor couldn’t look at us in the eye,” he said.
All doctors can hope for now is to hold the cancer at bay a little while longer.
The family lost their son Brendon in 2004 at the age of eight and will now lose Kieren at the same age.
Warren says the family is devastated.
“You don’t expect to have to bury your kids,” he said.
“Kieren’s sister Emily remembers when Brendon’s life support was turned off.
“I dread it more this time knowing what he is going to go through.
“We have a future of grief,” he said.
For the moment Keiren is able to walk a little bit, talk and enjoy life.
His family plan to take him to see the Cronulla Sharks play football and on a Sydney Harbour Cruise thanks to Marine Rescue NSW.
“We will make him as happy as he can be,” Warren said.
No-one is willing to think too far ahead though.
“He was talking about next year’s origin series, but he won’t be here for it,” Warren said.
“We haven’t told him he’s dying.
“The doctors advised us not to yet.
“We haven’t been sleeping. I am scared to go to sleep in case he dies.
The Thomas-Thompson’s will now immediately move to Sydney indefinitely and are trying to secure a home.
Their children will attend school in Sydney.
Warren has thanked the community for their support on behalf of his family.
