Two weeks of sub par conditions have started to create some very irritable, boarding on mentally unhinged surfers.
It has been such a stellar year for surf and to suddenly have it ripped out of our grasp has left us on the edge of having a tantrum like a kid being forced to go to the dentist. The good news is, the dismal dribbly waves are just a thing of the past as we set sail into a new week full of waves on the radar. So surfers turn that frown upside down and keep that surfboard close as it’s time to make up for the last two weeks of regurgitated one-foot waves and replace them with strong four-foot waves.
It actually was kind of hard to find any highlights this week as the surf was pretty damn poor but I guess our saviour was Rennies beach which opened its doors to a little right hand shore break that appeared on the high tide.
It gave a little bit of satisfaction to people who just had to get wet although it was busy since it was pretty much the only location that offered any type of waves.
When the Quiksilver team showed up it made the waves an even more precious commodity. It was cool to see some of the pro guys tear apart the minuscule waves and show some of the local boys the standard of surfing which can be accomplished in tiny waves.
What do three times world champions and one currently competing pro surfer have in common? Well besides all being absolute legends they will be at Akwa Surf on Saturday, September 3 in the afternoon. If you are like me and have always wanted to hang out with two times world champion Tom Carroll, two times world champion Damien Hardman, former world champion Barton Lynch and top 44 surfer Kai Otton and just chill, talk surf and learn what makes them tick, well now is your chance. We will be hosting a casual but fun evening. More information to follow next week – hope to see you there.
The Tahiti pro is in the middle of proceedings as I type, stop number 7 of the WSL tour and mixed results for world No. 1 Matt Wilkinson and former world champion Joel Parkinson who are just two of eight Australians who must surf for survival after a day of disaster for the Aussie contingent at the famed Teahupo’o break in Tahiti.
Of the 11 Australians in the world surf league event, only three veterans managed to win their first round bout at the infamous break renowned for breaking hearts and bodies. It was barrels of fun for Kai Otton, Adrian Melling and Adrian Buchan who all advanced into the third round of the Billabong Pro with any major dramas. Otton defeated world champion Adriano de Souza, Adam Melling posted the second highest score of the day in his heat and Buchan took down Parkinson.
“I love these waves but was a bit scared today because the conditions involve more luck and I just happened to have that good rhythm today,” Otton said.
But it was a different story for Wilkinson, beaten by wildcard Bruno Santos in his first outing as he bids to keep his campaign for a maiden world crown on track. Round 2 is on as I type and hopefully the guys have flipped their early results into positive.
