The phone booth arrived on Tuesday morning and staff at the unit were over the moon about how it turned out.
“It’s beyond my expectations. It’s absolutely fantastic," said staff member Tracy Gillespie, the brainchild behind the idea.
Tracey saw an ad on Facebook for a phone booth but on discovering the price tag she thought she may have local contacts that could help.
She approached the Ulladulla Men’s Shed and they agreed to help out. Businesses in the community pitched in to donate materials and the project came to life.
It took six weeks for shed member John Tierney to complete but he said it had “come up beaut”.
Tracy felt that a phone booth would have been a common sight for residents in their youth when they visited town centres and would make them feel more at home.
Roger Halls has been president of the Ulladulla Men’s shed for 12 months and says it’s a “fabulous community project” that they were involved in and “this is what we are about”.
The laughter garden has been recently renovated at the dementia unit and is a place for residents and their families and friends to enjoy.
Students from Ulladulla High School have also assisted with painting the hallways leading to the garden.
