Welcome back swell, so nice to see you again and hopefully we will have you around more often. That was the sentiment of surfers this week, even though we had a partly junky east swell hit the coast, it was a delight to paddle amongst walls of water that was strong enough to carry you without having to jump all over it like a hyperactive kid on a trampoline to gain any speed.
Another delight was the enjoyable sand formations building up on the beaches. At the moment nearly every beach has some sort of rippable wave on it so there is no excuse why you have not been in the aqua, and look out swell is on the way! A strong south east swell is due to hit this weekend ... yewww!
Sunday afternoon and an all star case consisting of the Parson brothers Brad, Grahame and his spawn Aiden, Elliot Marshall, Rubie Reents, Charlie Brophy, Ben Greenacre, Glen McDonald and Brett Burcher all stroked out late in the day at Flatrock ledge where the surf just peaked right before dark. In what can only be described as an orgy of barrels, spray and laughter, it was simply the session of the week, hats go off to Ben Greenacre who caught two particularly sweet tubes.
Something you don't want to miss is happening this Saturday afternoon from 5.30pm following the big Akwa sale we will be having a bit of good old story time with 2 x world champ Tom Carroll, 2 x world champ Damien Hardman, former world champion Barton Lynch, current top pro surfer Kai Otton and local shaper Dylan Perese from DP surfboards to just chill, talk surf, surfboards and generally find out what it's like to lead the life of surfing royalty.
Following the big day on Saturday Ulladulla Boardriders will be holding their monthly event and the same bunch of guys will be holding an expression session, so if you ever wanted to see Tom, Damien, Kai and Barton surf in real life now is your chance. A special heat will be put on around mid ay at a venue determined on the day, for all member past and present I advise you try your best to come down as it's something pretty much unseen in our waters – we will be meeting at Rennies from 7.30am
Are we sure we can't script this? Because when we envisioned the day Kelly Slater finally found the winner's circle again it sure looked a lot like this one. After all, perfect Teahupo'o was the ideal setting for this type of feat. And had you asked Kelly beforehand if he could pick anyone to beat on the occasion, there's little doubt he would have said John John Florence. And that's exactly who he got.
"This is for sure one of the best wins I've ever had," an emotional Slater said afterward. "To have John John in the final is a dream for me. You know, where I am on the back end of my career and him and Gabe on their way up…those guys are monsters." Slater's legend grows. The 44-year-old just bagged his 55th elite tour win; his 5th at Teahupo'o.
